How To Install A Theme From The WordPress Themes Directory

The WordPress themes directory is where you can go to get free themes. (Although I strongly recommend against using free themes, click here to see why.)

Installing a theme from the WordPress directory is actually pretty simple, in fact it’s almost the same as above, but you don’t need to download the theme.

Step 1/2 – Go To “Themes” Within Your WordPress Admin Area

So like before, you need to be logged in to your WordPress admin area, then,

Add A New Theme In WordPress

  1. In the navigation menu, go to “Appearance”, then “Themes”
  2. And click “Add New”

Then find the theme you want to use,

Find The Theme You Want To Install In The WordPress Directory

  2. If you know the theme you want to use, just type the name into this box
  3. To install a theme, hover over it and click “Install”

Step 2/2 – Activate Your New Theme

How To Switch To Different Themes

You’ve pretty much already seen how to switch to different themes, but in case you’re not sure, in the navigation menu go to “Appearance”, then “Themes”, hover over the theme you want to use and click “Activate”.

How To Remove A WordPress Theme

If at anytime you decide you don’t want to have a theme installed on your WordPress site, in the navigation menu, go to “Appearance”, then “Themes”, hover over the theme you want to delete and click “Theme Details”.

Theme Details

Then, in the bottom right hand corner, click delete.

How To Delete A WordPress Theme

Note: You can’t delete an active theme. So if you want to delete a theme that’s currently active, first switch to another theme and then you’ll be able to delete it.

And that’s it for this lesson, you now know how to install, switch between or remove WordPress themes.

Next Steps

This lesson is a part of Step 5 in creating your website and learning how to use WordPress. Step 5 is all about installing and setting up your WordPress theme.

I’ve broken this step into two parts.

In the first part, we cover the basics of WordPress themes, which you can see in these four lessons,

Then we move on to the second part, setting up your theme.

Now because there are 10,000+ different themes, all with different options, it’s impossible for me to show you how to set them all up!

However I can show you how to setup the following,

  • WordPress Menus: – See how to change the links within your navigation menu and also see how to create a drop down menu
  • WordPress Widgets: – Learn how to use widgets to customize what gets displayed in your widget areas, such as your sidebar and footer
  • WordPress Plugins: – See how to add extra features and functionality to your site, such as a contact form, a slideshow, a coming soon page, etc
